Château des Vergers
Description
Whether you are a lover of contemporary art, a traveller concerned about your impact on the environment while on holiday, an artist, or simply someone who appreciates beauty, tranquillity and nature, the Château des Vergers is the place for you... This former 19th-century hunting lodge, already remarkable for its architecture, has now become an ode to contemporary art. Here, centuries-old stone walls stand alongside works by international designers and architects. Inside, everything is refinement, wonder and poetry for the eyes. Among the renowned artists featured here are Philippe Starck, Eriko Horiki, Philipp Mainzer, Gio Ponti and, of course, Gaudi.
It is also said that the peaceful atmosphere of this château allows guests to discover nature in a way that most people have never experienced before. The interior beauty of Château des Vergers pales in comparison to the vast wilderness that surrounds the château and will leave you feeling uplifted. The owner wanted to minimise his impact on the environment, ensuring that nature was not pushed beyond the walls of the château, but remained accessible, almost on the doorstep.
Nestled in the heart of a 150-hectare private estate treated as a veritable conservatory of plant species, the château offers its guests access to its orchards of apples, pears, kiwis and plums planted with ancient species, its horse pastures, its park and remarkable trees, and even its small wild pond at the foot of the Château, a true natural ecosystem with frogs, dragonflies, toads, salamanders... But above all, its large private wild lake will delight everyone. Located 100 metres below the Château and fed all year round (even during periods of drought and heatwave) by an underground spring, it offers a small private beach of fine sand, shaded by a majestic weeping willow, with sun loungers and kayaks.
With an interior surface area of 450m², travellers will find many intimate and comfortable living spaces at Château des Vergers. Seven bedrooms and five bathrooms are available for a maximum of 14 guests. All the rooms have a different charm, but all offer the same exceptional comfort, always mindful of their environmental impact. The mattresses are futons, selected for their softness and firm comfort, and the bed linen and household linen are all made of organic linen, cotton or natural fibres.
As for the furniture, Battlo chairs by Gaudi are paired with Pierre Chareau armchairs, Gio Ponti lighting and Florian Asche shelves. One of the rooms even has private access to the castle’s watchtower, renovated with a floating spiral staircase. A stunning effect!
The bathrooms have all been decorated with the most beautiful oriental handcrafted ceramics. Some have wooden bathtubs, others have Philippe Starck toilets or showers with invisible drains. Some have wall heating incorporated into lime walls encrusted with real gold flakes…
On site, travellers share a kitchen and a utility room that are perfectly equipped to cook whatever they might desire and even learn the art of Japanese barbecuing with the Kamado available on site. A ‘chapel’ for relaxation, with a sculpted plaster vaulted ceiling and comfortable sofas, will encourage your guests to read, meditate, sing or draw… while others may prefer the second lounge for a digestif Armagnac or a board game.
Two dining rooms are also available on site. An intimate dining room for dinners, adjacent to the kitchen. And the large dining room, preferred by travellers for breakfast and lunch. The latter can also be used as a meeting room or for group evenings. Unless you prefer to use the outdoor dining area in the shade of the Japanese cedar tree on beautiful Gascony days? It is always shaded, faces the Château and offers a view of the hills of the rest of the property. The more curious among you may notice the giant copper egg, a monumental work of art designed by the owner, which you can enter and, why not, shout out your happiness at being here…
But the surprises don’t end there, as a small dovecote has also been renovated, tucked away in the garden, designed as an additional sleeping space, a tea hut and a holiday artist’s studio. It will be open to you and you can watch the birds in the oak woods or the owner’s milking horses from its terrace.
